Yes, even the recap of the All Star Game has Game Notes. It was a game after all. There's no fantasy value in any of it, but its blogerrific. Best of luck to everyone in the second half of the season. My thanks for reading along with me every day. On to the Game Notes!
"The previous longest game by time was 1967, which took 3:41. " The 1967 game went 15 innings as well. What does it say about the modern game that it took 4:50 to play? I understand that today's advertiser's need to get paid. What I don't understand is how the same game can take a full hour longer. This same generation raised on video games is going to let baseball die if we don't move the game along. (Bud Selig telling managers to jog to the mound ain't the solution either.)
"Drew became the 15th player to homer in his first All-Star at-bat, the first since the Mets' David Wright two years ago." Who says JD Drew is destined for the DL? Actually, that was me and every other fantasy owner. I thought he was going to blow a hammy rounding first.
"Carlos Zambrano startled Manny Ramirez with a playful breaking ball over his head in the fourth." My man love for Big Z is well documented here and on the boards, so I think I cannot be called a hater when I say that Zambrano should have been given a warning by the home plate umpire. The pitch may have been a joke - one I'm surprised that Manny was willing to play along with - but it was stupid. The last thing he would have wanted to do was bean Ramirez in the melon. Personally, I would have loved it if he had...
"There were a record six steals by the AL and a record seven overall." Wouldn't you think that the NL would try anything to get a competitive advantage in the game? 11 losses in a row is freakin' embarrasing. The guys running the bases in the AL aren't faster than the NL.
"The NL was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, the AL 3-for-22." Chalk it up to good pitching and fielding. After all of these innings and every All Star game played, the total score from every All Star Game played has the American League leading by two (335-333).
"The Hall of Fame collected two souvenirs -- Rivera's jersey and dirt from the pitcher's mound." Both will be buried in the foundation of the new Fenway Park when it is constructed...or not.
